Gladstone Church: New Covered Walkway & Porte Cochere

Mission:

The church needed their decaying flat roof that covered their walkway and main entry demolished and replaced with a new covered walkway and entry. They also wanted a covered entry that would be high enough for a school bus to pass under when unloading children or senior citizens.

Result:

The architect decided to design a covered walkway with a sloped roof since the local climate has rain for much of the year.  He also design the covered entry to accommodate a bus to pass under.  This covered structure for a vehicle to drop off patrons is called a porte cochere.  Although from history, a porte cochere can be quite a beautiful and ornate structure, the architect took into consideration the building style of the church building.  The design reflects the simple wood structure of the church building and adjacent school building. The simple and functional design will allow the patrons protection from the weather before and after their services.

Michael’s Fine Furniture Warehouse
Renovation & Showroom Addition

Michael’s Fine Furniture has a prominent location on NE 181st & San Rafael St.

Michael, the owner, chose to renovate 14,000 s.f. of his 34,000 s.f. warehouse into a showroom, including a new 20 foot wide mezzanine around the perimeter. Then, seeing an unnecessary parking area abutting 181st Ave, he requested his architect design a two-story showroom, complete with tower and atrium.

This design increased his street presence to a busy major arterial, and made a welcoming pedestrian entry.
