Result:

The architect implemented the owners’ design request of a new vaulted living room.

To accentuate their desired French Eclectic style, the architect designed small gable dormers in the vaulted roof.  These dormers not only allow for natural light, but enable views from the second-story balcony to distance wooded hills. The kitchen and dining room were moved to the main floor off the living room to maximize efficiency for their lifestyle and entertainment. Other features include an arched stone covered entry, tall windows and heavy timber accents.

NE Portland Snout House Conversion
to Bungalow Style 520 S.F. addition

Mission: A young family of four were living in small house in a nice neighborhood but were in great need of extra space for kitchen, laundry and seasonal storage items. In addition, the husband and wife desired a new bath, pantry, and quite space for the work-from-home dad.  The couple was delighted as architect presented the couple with a plan of how these could be located in place of the single car garage.  The plan of the addition included a spacious Dining/Living area that not only expanded in width and height, but opened to natural daylight as well.

St. John’s View Property

Mission: The owner of a 1970’s garage/shop building, located in the St. John’s neighborhood, was inspired to convert this building into a two-story residence that took advantage of the view across the river to the lust green hills of Forest Park. He worked closely with his architect to achieve his dream.

Result: During the design process the owner and architect concluded the most advantageous type of structure would be composed of a Main Dwelling and an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The first floor unit was designed to be the ADU and accessible for physically challenged people. The Master Suite features a wheelchair accessible shower and 3 ft. wide doors throughout. Another unique feature is radiant floor heating.

The Main Dwelling was designed with a guest bedroom on the ground floor with a full bath, then on the second floor are two bedrooms, bath and great room opening to a large covered deck. When standing on the deck the owner realized his dream of the view high above houses to the verdant hills of Forest Park.

Result: The carport was replaced with a spacious home office featuring a high ceiling and pleasing natural light. The form emulates the existing vernacular of Modern Contemporary architecture which includes low sloped roofs. The owner has plenty of storage and work space.
